Data is scarce on mortality and cause of death, morbidity, population and demography, socioeconomic, and health care services at national and subnational levels in Ethiopia. Currently, more than 10 Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSS) and District Health Information System (DHIS-2) are functioning to fill existing data gaps. The HDSS are population based open cohort surveillance systems and DHIS-2 is routine health care data system potentially from all health facilities across the country. Both data systems have major challenges in terms of national representativeness, accuracy and completeness. The motivation of this collaborative is to maximize the use of both data sources using state of the art analytic science, correcting known biases and produce district burden of disease estimates, and to improve the quality of the data generated.
