This health atlas presents key results from the National Data Management Center (NDMC) for health at EPHI and IHME collaborative subnational burden of disease analysis as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 for Ethiopia. For the first time, the unit provides a collaborative analysis on the effects of 369 diseases and injuries, and 87 risk factors on premature mortality, disability, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for Ethiopia’s regions and chartered cities from 1990 to 2019. The unit used all available data identified through extensive institutional collaboration efforts and involving over 700 leading researchers and policy makers from Ethiopia.
The analysis highlights substantial health gains since 1990 as well as the disparities between regions and chartered cities. Moreover it highlights the opportunity that remains to reduce the burden due to premature mortality by addressing specific diseases, risk factors, and socio-demographic factors. This study has also measured the progress and the variations across regions and chartered cities, complimenting efforts to make policy decisions at different levels. The results identify and rank potential priorities for actions that would reduce burden and provide relevant support for regions and chartered cities. Overall, Ethiopia has been making progress over the last three decades on key health indicators. However, the current conflict/war and COVID-19 pandemic could negatively affect the progress. While mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and DALYs have all shown improvements over the past three decades, YLLs from both communicable and non-communicable diseases remain high in many parts of Ethiopia.
This atlas, basically, focuses on priority diseases measured in terms of death, disability adjusted life years, years lived with disability, years of life lost, life expectancy and health adjusted life expectancy, demographics, and other related measures.
